He thought he could still call his mom for money and help when he needed it. When she said no, and set firm boundaries, he realized what he needed to do: seek professional help. If his mom kept helping him, it would have made him just a little bit more comfortable in his addiction, enough to keep him going. He attributes his success to that very moment she said no.
